Origin: Taiwan
Leafhopper Bitten Oolong is a hand-crafted, Taiwan competition oolong tea that is prized for its beautifully deep amber color and soft, muscatel-sweet taste. Made by picking the bud and first two leaves, this tea has a wonderful floral-fruity aroma and notes of honey and apricots.
Bai Hao Oolong leaves are created when small, green leafhoppers that thrive only in warm and pollution-free environments, suck the juices of tea leaves, buds and stems. Terpenes are released in the bitten leaves, which create a honey-like taste. To encourage the presence of green leafhoppers, the tea bushes are grown in warmer, lower altitudes of 300 to 800 meters, in unpolluted areas between the mountains and plains with an abundance of moisture and sunshine. Due to the warm weather, only 40% of the tea leaves can be harvested and the rest are lost to the intense summer heat. This produces prized yield and has made authentic Leafhopper Bitten Oolong a tea highly sought after by connoisseurs.
To make Bai Hao Oolong, the tea leaves are dried longer under the sun due to its high moisture content. Following a precise process, they are intensely sun-baked to 80% oxidation, in the process intensifying their sweet, woody and rich flavor. The wet leaves are beautiful to look at, forming a beautiful kaleidoscope of purple to reddish autumn colors. This tea is both wonderful on its own or paired with desserts.

I like my oolongs more oxidised and this one is perfect. Its amber color is also beautiful and the taste is soft, muscatel-like. There were overtones of fruit, more towards peach and apricot contributing to its distinct flavor. Also, just thinking about the environment where the tea is grown is fascinating enough for anyone to try this! A must have in your tea collections especially if you entertain often and your guests know their teas.

I love this tea so much! As what the description says, the wet leaves are indeed beautiful to look at, like autumn on a rainy day. It reminded me of my uni days in Denmark in autumn! The most unique quality of this tea is its gentle woody flavor, something you hardly find in other oolongs as floral and fruity are more common notes. I found this deeply relaxing, and more full bodied than I expected.

One of the rare tea sellers who sell competition oolong teas from Taiwan due to its rarity and limited quantities. All the oolongs here are great and this one is no less, I enjoyed its robust and full bodied-ness, and leaves are more oxidised which makes them very unique, with a hint of fruitwood.

Bought a sampler pack to try out of curiosity and it is quite special! However I still prefer my favorite peach oolong and white grape oolong which are just straight up fruity. But still a 5 star review as the quality is high and the leaves unfurl beautifully.
