Flavonoids Polyphenols
Flavonoids are one class of polyphenols found in rooibos. The names of the flavonoids in rooibos include: aspalathin, nothofagin, quercetin, rutin, isoquercitrin, orientin, isorientin, luteolin, vitexin, isovitexin and chrysoeriol. Specifically, orientin is an effective free-radical scavenger that may reduce cellular changes associated with cancer. Luteolin and quercetin are also being researched for their role in cancer prevention.
Aspalathin Polyphenols
Another valuable polyphenol in rooibos is called aspalathin. It is notable that the only natural source of aspalathin is rooibos tea. Numerous studies on aspalathin in recent years have revealed the antioxidant properties of aspalathin relating to skin healing and tumor prevention
Phenolic Acid Polyphenols
The phenolic acid polyphenols, which are in rooibos, include caffeic acid, protocatechuic acid, syringic acid, ferulic acid, vanillic acid, p-hydroxybenzoic acid and p-coumaric acid. Perhaps the most notable of these is caffeic acid, which may be as potent as aspalathin in its antioxidant power. In one cup of rooibos tea, 60 to 80 mg of polyphenols may be present.

A very generous teabag of rooibos and buckwheat compared with other brands of teas. In fact this is why I like Craftsman Tea, they are so generous and each teabag can be steeped 4 to 5 times without losing much of its flavor. I steep mine the entire day adding in water when its finished. Super flavorful, nutty, rich and smooth. A very good quality rooibos base.

I love buckwheat rooibos! I would describe its flavor akin to Genmaicha, but more nutty, more toasty, deeper and with no “siapness” of green tea — I can oversteep it forever. Perhaps for the office when I am so busy and will never remember to fish my teabag out of the cup. The flavor is amazing, this is my favourite tea, alternating with apple caramel rooibos which is just as good!
